South Alabama Gas

South Alabama Gas
The Gas District is unique in that for at least the last twenty-five years it has bought all or part of its natural gas from local producers.  For the past twelve years, the District has purchased virtually all of its gas from producing oil/gas wells in the Frisco City, Excel, and Huxford areas.  This has saved the District and its customers millions of dollars over those years compared to the cost of buying natural gas from interstate pipelines.

The District is also quite active in promoting local industrial development in the counties it serves.

South Alabama Gas was established in May of 1961.  Act No. 762, adopted by the Legislature of the State of Alabama in September 1951, provided for the creation of "gas districts".  At this time, natural gas distribution systems had been built to serve citizens in most of the larger towns.  Gas districts were established to bring gas service to small towns and rural areas by sharing ownership of the district between more than one town, city, or county.  This concept was somewhat analogous to rural electric cooperatives.
