Facts about water heating options.!
Water Heaters: Electric or Gas?
Alabama power issued a two page flyer seeking to persuade customers to choose an electric tank over a gas tankless water heater. They claimed the electric water heater was preferable to a gas tankless due to the following factors: lower equipment cost, easier to install, high efficiency rating and superior performance. While the electric tank itself has a high efficiency rating, it is not an efficient way to heat water. Gas tankless water heaters offer superior efficiency, convenience and space savings with respectable payback periods even in these time of high natural gas prices.
Listed below are a few of the quotes stated in the article. (Note: The text in black font below is from the Alabama Power flyer, items in red text are the rebuttals from Rinnai.)
Higher initial cost - high equipment price and installation
The higher initial cost is offset by energy savings.
20-year life means you use one tankless water heater in the same time you would use 2-3 tanks.
And don't forget the other benefits compared to a tank: never run out of hot water, save space.
Combustion noise - should consider burner noise of locating near patio or outside recreation areas or inside closet.
Rinnai tankless water heaters run at 49 decibels, equivalent to a standard refrigerator
No stored water as back up
No stored water is necessary for back up. If the electricity goes out, the Rinnai can be powered by a typical backup batter for computers or home electronic appliances.
